Alison Pincus Susan Feldman
When One Kings Lane launched in 2009, it was the result of the dedication, drive and vision of two female entrepreneurs. And ironically, it coincided with the worst economic downturn in US history since the Great Depression.
Susan Feldman, who’d spent her career as a senior sales executive in the New York City fashion world, had recently moved to LA. After years of apartment living, she was passionately decorating her new house, and facing a challenge: finding the time, inspiration, and guidance she coveted given her busy schedule – at price points that were equally inspirational!
At the same time, in San Francisco, Alison Pincus was also ready for an entrepreneurial venture. Professionally involved in the web from a business-development and content-production perspective since her college graduation, she was an avid design enthusiast who frequently blogged about new lifestyle trends she was spotting. After working for larger media companies for more than a decade, she was ready to launch a company of her own.
Susan and Alison recognized a void that they wanted to fill: There was no exciting, curated destination where consumers could shop, get inspired, find their favorite home and lifestyle brands, and discover new ones.
Susan was an empty nester. Alison was recently married and starting a family. With their very distinct but complementary backgrounds and personalities, they were the perfect team for the task. When they were introduced in the early fall of 2008, they were thrilled to discover their shared passion and vision.
The pair worked feverishly. At a time when lenders weren’t lending, they used their savings to start their business, and made a commitment to each other to give it their all. In March of 2009, a mere five months after that fortuitous introduction, One Kings Lane was launched.
Today, One Kings Lane is the leading new commerce company for the home, offering the best of top-brand, vintage and designer items at exceptional values.
Since its launch in 2009, the company has grown to more than 6 million members, reached $200 million in revenue in 2012, and has a staff of more than 350 employees across three offices in San Francisco, New York, and Beverly Hills.
With Susan leading the charge on merchandising and Alison leading strategy, their mutual dream has been realized. But the journey has just begun.
