Our stylists agree that a tan headboard, light or dark, makes a soothing neutral backdrop. For always-stylish bedding to go with it? Think blue and white.

Q: #DearOKL: What are some soothing/relaxing color schemes that go with a tan upholstered headboard?—@lgdye

A: Great question! We love the look of indigo pillows and white bedding to coordinate with a tan headboard. It’s hard to go wrong with classic blue and white. If you want something a little softer we would recommend light blue or sea-glass green, either in an allover pattern or as embroidery. Perfectly soothing for the bedroom.

When it comes to pillows, our stylists say go big with scale—Euro shams, large accent pillows—and just a pinch of print.

Q: How do I arrange pillows and cushions so they look gorgeous?—@suze_riley

A: We recommend mixing scale and pattern to add visual interest to your bedding. You can use Euro shams, standard shams, and pillowcases as a base depending on your preference, and you can also try adding a couple of larger accent pillows along with a small floral or other patterned throw pillow for a fun seasonal refresh!

Q: How can I do an all-white bed without it being boring?—@alli_yost

A: The short answer: Try mixing and matching textures and fabrics. That really adds interest and will give a layered feel that will be anything but boring!

In the video above, our resident bedding expert and stylist Eileen started with a washed-cotton duvet set with a crochet detail for a bohemian, relaxed, and romantic feel. Then she added a textured pattern in a matching matelassé coverlet with Euro shams. These give the duvet set a bit of structure and formality, while the pattern adds some fun. Last, she used sheeting with light blue embroidery. Embroidered sheets add a great pinch of color that you can change out seasonally. Inspired to try an all-white bed?
