#OKLObsessed: Timeless Tuxedo Kitchens

Filed Under:

You may not have heard of a “tuxedo kitchen,” but the design concept contains all the same elements as its sartorial namesake: monochromatic color-blocking, timeless style, and universal appeal in its elegance and simplicity. To see how this trend is taking hold in the design world, we turned to some of our favorite Instagram friends for inspiration—and boy, do they provide it in spades.

Read on to see some of our all-time favorites and steal some Insta-ready tips on making this classic color palette feel all your own.

Go Glam with Gold à la @studiomcgee

Brighten your space (and add a little glamour while you’re at it!) by placing light-reflecting metallics in eye-catching areas, such as a set of gold-dipped pendants above the kitchen island.

Get Matchy-Matchy à la @elizabethlawsondesign

For a cohesive look, make sure you match your hardware to your tapware and your light fixtures. We love the way these modern brass fixtures contrast with Elizabeth Lawson’s rustic apron sink and classic black Shaker cabinets.

Make It Minimalist à la @cottonwoodinteriors

This kitchen’s pared-down palette allows the natural materials used as elemental accents within it—like the raw wide-plank floors and an antique wood bread board on the honed Carrara marble counter—to truly shine. A smattering of potted succulents adds to the organic appeal.

Show Off a High-Contrast Collection à la @pencilandpaperco

We love everything about this darling design duo’s inspiring space (see their full Nashville home tour here!), but the element that catches our eye the most is the black built-ins housing the couple’s collection of gleaming white ceramics. It’s equal parts easy and elegant.

Warm Up with Jewel Tones à la @amberinteriors

Amber Lewis has an unequivocal knack for adding elevated bohemian flair to any interior, and this modern black-and-white kitchen is no exception. Try adding a rug in a rich raspberry hue in your monochromatic space to get the look at home.

Highlight Architecture with Great Lighting à la @johnstoffer

A high-contrast kitchen practically begs for luxurious lighting to heighten the drama of architectural details—such as a vaulted ceiling—and to properly illuminate it after dark. Treat your kitchen like an art gallery and install lighting in grouped vignettes throughout the space. Bonus points to John Stoffer for sticking with the B&W theme on his desktop background too!

Lighten Up with Wood Accents à la @jasonarnoldinteriors

While floor-to-ceiling black cabinets sound like they could easily overwhelm, Jason Arnold keeps his space feeling bright with a light-reflecting glossy subway-tile backsplash and blonde wood accents throughout, from the bistro barstools to the butcher-block counters.

Maximize Your Space à la @lisadieder

Don’t let a small space limit you! Lisa Dieder’s industrial-infused vignette shows that thoughtful details and cohesive curation can make any space feel big on style. Can’t afford the suite of lighting you’ve been coveting? Splurge on a single, special sconce, and style it in an unexpected way, like above the sink.
