Inside Our Co-Founder’s Spectacular Holiday Fete

Filed Under:

There was only one way to celebrate our successful collaboration on an exclusive product line with Martyn Lawrence Bullard and Mary McDonald—throwing a holiday party! With two such stylish honorees, our co-founder and evening’s hostess, Susan Feldman, decided to take this holiday fete to the next level by using many of the products from the designers’ collection for One Kings Lane. See how she put an unexpected spin on seasonal decor.

A Dramatic Entrance

A pair of red-ribbon topiaries, created by our crafty stylists and placed in footed silver bowls, flanked the entrance to the house, setting a chic yet playful tone. Inside, the foyer was adorned with forced narcissus bulbs (or paperwhites, as they’re commonly known) atop simple milk jugs for a entryway that looked, and smelled, amazing.

A Bold and Bright Table

A graphic chevron tablecloth may not be the first thing that comes to mind when strategizing your holiday decor, but it made for a dramatic foundation for the evening’s table setting. Instead of stemware, mismatched tumblers in dressed-up ruby and gold (both from the collection, as is the tablecloth) continued the bold look.

Quick and Doable Arrangements

Small, simple flower arrangements were placed in votives and dotted down the center of the table.

Giftable Goodies

Wrapped candles, small gifts for each guest, doubled as place cards, an idea we’re loving this holiday season. We asked the guests of honor, Martyn and Mary, for some of their favorite gifts to surprise guests with at the table, all of which could easily pull double-duty as place cards.

Martyn’s Favorite Favors

Fragrant candles
Small vintage books wrapped in a silk bow
Decorative boxes filled with his favorite sea-salt truffles

Mary’s Favorite Favors

Small bud vases
Single ornaments
Hand towels for the powder room

Menus As Mementos

Printed menus added a special sense of occasion to the party and became wonderful mementos of the evening. This idea couldn’t be easier to replicate at home with a formatted Word document and a few sheets of heavy paper. For small parties, we adore handwritten menus.

Festive Touches

Tiny rosemary wreaths were hung on the back of each guest’s chair for a bit of extra holiday flair. A sprig of mistletoe tied with ribbon would also do the trick.

Extra-Special Touches

Given that the two honorees are famous for their over-the-top touches, it seemed only fitting to have an over-the-top dessert that echoed some of the patterns from the collection, along with tons of candlelight.

A Stocked Bar

Glasses and a tray from the collection were grouped together to create a ready-to-serve bar. To infuse the evening with a bit of fun, Black and White Ball-style masks were available for some quick photo ops. Get the template here.
