Right now Reece Solomon, the designer behind in-demand bag line Reece Hudson, is having a major moment. Just ask Jennifer Lawrence, Miranda Kerr, Leandra Medine, and Rihanna, who’ve all been spotted with her cool leather bags draped over their shoulders and tucked under their arms. It’s a zeitgeist of sorts, one that’s centralized in a small office with sky-high ceilings, seriously good light in the buzzy NYC neighborhood of SoHo.
We gave her airy space a major makeover to bring the decor up to the level of chic she achieves with her hot bag designs, and stuck around to chat about inspiration, work-space must-haves, and, of course, personal style.
Describe your personal style in five words or less.
“Easy, eclectic, edgy, and sophisticated.”
To what do you attribute your success?
“Having a great business partner with whom I share a singular vision.”
Do you have a favorite material to work with?
“The look of leather changes with age and wear, which makes it constantly evolve—and I love that. No two leather bags can ever truly be identical in that respect. But really, all natural materials are interesting to work with because they always have slight imperfections, which I find make them more beautiful and special. I also love working with metal and plastics—primarily in my hardware and evening bags—for the exact opposite reason: I find their permanence really appealing.”

So this is your first proper office space—what feeling did you want it to capture?
“My primary concern was creating an environment that was inspiring, but didn’t visually compete with whatever work I was currently doing. I also wanted a space that looked professional but was also incredibly comfortable.”
Did you have a specific design style in mind?
“I wanted to create a neutral, but elegant, backdrop that felt modern with eclectic touches. We were lucky enough to find a space with great natural light and high ceilings, both of which are very important to me.”
If that’s your office style, what’s your home decorated like?
“It’s actually a similar vibe to my office: a mix of midcentury and traditional with bohemian touches.”
Those bulletin boards are pretty amazing. What’s your approach to art?
“I go with what I like. Art is supposed to elicit a feeling or reaction in the viewer, so if a piece doesn’t move me then it doesn’t interest me. I like supporting friends of mine who are artists—it makes the pieces more personal to me, which in turn makes them more special.”

You have your dream office, but—truth time!—is there anything you’d like to change?
“I never seem to have enough table space, or enough free space on my bulletin boards.”
If you had to play favorites, which piece in your office would it be?
“Definitely my vintage side table.”
When are you…
…sitting at your desk?
“When I am on the computer, writing emails, working on line plans or charts, and doing general research. Also, I’ll be there if I’m having a Skype meeting with one of our international partners.”
…sitting on the couch?
“When I am sketching, reading the newspaper, or having a design or strategy meeting.”
…sitting on the floor?
“Often when I am laying out different materials or color options. Or just during my process of assembling my mood boards.”

As a designer, who are your favorite designers?
“At the moment Raf Simons and Proenza Schouler.”
Is there any piece of clothing you’re currently coveting?
“I’m on the hunt for the perfect pair of vintage Levi’s. I have a jean obsession!”
And last but not least, what’s in your bag right now?
“Wallet, MetroCard, rosebud lip salve, iPhone, headphones, Altoids, keys, a lighter, a small notebook, and a pencil.”
