Room Crush: Industrial Glam Kitchen

Room Crush: Industrial Glam Kitchen
Filed Under:

The room: An open, industrial-chic kitchen

The Location: A Portland, Oregon loft

The Designer: Jessica Helgerson

We’re wild for the understated cool of this open grey kitchen, from the polished concrete floor to the hand-blown glass chandelier. Read on for how to steal this industrial-chic look.

Why It Works

Despite the room’s simple, spare design and understated palette of white, espresso, and gray, it walks the line between cool and cozy thanks to Helgerson’s choice of materials: There’s the warm and textural brick (both edging the windows and lining the backsplash), those heavy wood ceiling beams, and the rustic-leaning furnishings.

Our Favorite Part

The glazed brick, in Dossena Quartz from Gran Brique, continuing from the backsplash onto the range hood—genius! “We wanted to keep the number of materials we introduced into the room to a minimum,” Helgerson says. “It’s a Vent-A-Hood unit with a plywood frame over it, and the tile went right onto the plywood.”

The wood-slab table from Helgerson’s “super secret” wholesale source, Eames DKW chairs, and hand-blown-glass chandelier from Ochre, infuse the space with a perfectly imperfect handmade feel.

5 Decorating Ideas to Steal

1) Natural brick can add warmth to an otherwise cool palette.
2) Opt for a table in lieu of a kitchen island rather than forcing a separate dining area if you really don’t have the space.
3) One long wood shelf is a design-forward twist on the open-shelving craze.
4) Embrace concrete floors. Helgerson pulled up yellow bamboo laminate and simply polished the concrete.
5) Not only does gray grout define the pattern of your tile, it majorly helps conceal dirt.
