A Parting Piece of Knowledge…

We can’t get enough of nautical decor and accents—and perhaps the most famous (and perplexing!) of all sea-inspired pieces is the ship in a bottle. It’s the most popular iteration of a type of puzzle known as an “impossible bottle,” which contains an item seemingly too large to fit through the bottle’s mouth (others feature matchboxes, fruit, and decks of cards). While the exact origin of these objects isn’t fully clear, they became popular to both make and collect around the 1860s, when the quality and clarity of glass began to greatly improve. As for the trick: The most common way of getting the ship into the bottle is to slide the hull into the bottle with the masts and sails down, pulling them up with attached strings once inside. Anchors aweigh!
