A Parting Piece of Knowledge…

With its deep button tufting, rich leather upholstery, and high rolled arms, the chesterfield is a sofa with classic appeal—and an equally pedigreed origin story. Lord Philip Stanhope, the fourth Earl of Chesterfield, is said to have commissioned the sofa in the 1700s, wanting an upright spot for gentlemen to sit without wrinkling their suits. The style quickly became a staple in London gentlemen’s clubs and then gained popularity around the world through trade and the expansion of the British Empire. Today’s iterations often feature updated details—think nail-head trim, bright hues, and linen and velvet upholstery—but the timeless and traditional appeal of the original remains.
