A Gorgeous Wintry White Arrangement in 4 Easy Steps

A Gorgeous Wintry White Arrangement in 4 Easy Steps
Filed Under:

“The earth laughs in flowers,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. And we couldn’t agree more. That’s why we tasked our style director (and talented floral designer), Meghan Guthrie, to create this dreamy arrangement inspired by a winter sky with shades of silver, white, and gray. “I wanted it to give you a sense of walking through the woods in winter,” Meghan says. Here’s exactly how to to pull off this ethereal arrangement, just in time for the holidays.

Directions

1. Select your vessel—gleaming metallics elevate the flowers’ subdued palette. Meghan herself worked with a mint-julep cup. “It feels special and glamorous, but its wideness allows for a loose, casual shape.”

2. Start by filling in pieces of dusty miller, an ornamental plant Meghan chose because “it looks as if it’s covered in a dusting of snow.”

3. Intersperse pine sprigs (to bring a bit more of the outdoors in) with leucadendrons (for a graphic statement).

4. Finish with the showpiece blooms: downy white peonies, which Meghan brought in for their “soft and messy look” and a few paperwhite narcissi “because their scent fills a room so nicely.”

Arranging Tip: When arranging, it’s good to work in odd numbers. Here, three peonies looked better than two or four.
