Why We Love This

In their respective processes--one as an artist, the other as designer--Alexander Calder and Jean Prouvé mastered the techniques of manipulating metal into dynamic form. They met in the early 1950s and corresponded regularly, exchanging ideas on architecture and sculpture. In 1958 they collaborated on the construction of the steel base of "La Spirale," a huge standing mobile commissioned by UNESCO for its headquarters in Paris. Calder works in the book include mobiles, stabiles, and a suite of 30 little-known animal drawings, while Prouvé is represented by rare examples of furniture and architecture, including a service station.
