Why We Love This

An original drypoint printed in black ink on laid paper bearing the “Pellet et Legrand” surmounted by a Swan and Fleur-de-lys watermark. Hand-signed in pencil in the margin lower right "Louis Legrand," also signed in the plate upper left. This is a superb impression of Arwas’ third state of five, showing rich burr throughout, printed after the reduction of the plate, From the edition of 65 on this paper, numbered “7/65” in pencil also lower right (apart from the editions of 3 on parchment and 30 on Japan paper printed prior to the reduction of the plate and the removal of the remarque, and the edition of the fourth state issued in La Gazette des Beaux-Arts, April, 1911, Vol. I, p. 300). One of eight plates from the album Les Bars, published by Gustave Pellet, Paris, with his monogram stamp (Lugt 1193) in red ink at the lower right corner of the plate.Literature regarding this artwork: Loys Delteil, Manuel de l’Amateur d’Estampes des XiXe at XXe Siécles (1801-1924), vol. II, Dorbon-Ainé, Paris, p. 346. This work is part of a carefully curated selection by noted fine art expert Jennifer McCloskey, who was formerly affiliated with Doyle Gallery in New York and is now based in San Francisco.
