Sterling Strauser was born in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania and became a painter in the expressionist/impressionist styles, using the heavy impasto technique. He began painting in 1926 in the Impressionist-style which later evolved into an assertive modernism. He was also an illustrator for Mademoiselle magazine and Blue Unicorn: A Magazine of Poetry.
