Why We Love This

The Book of Fishes by John Oliver La Gorce. Washington, D.C.: National Geographic Society, 1924. First Edition. 243 pages. Hardcover in dark brown faux leather covers, embossed with gilded titles and seahorse medallion. Includes color plates of 92 species of fish found in the ocean shores, lakes, and rivers of North America. There are also many black white illustrations. Skeletal remains of a fish pressed into the book, as if a flower, which is how it appears.

NHL and its books have been profiled in Vogue, C Magazine, The Peak of Chic, Angeleno, Vogue Living, the Los Angeles Times, and American Express’s Black Ink Magazine. Elle Décor recommended NHL for its “hip vintage books” from a “smart young dealer.”
