Why We Love This

Madame Chrysanthème by Pierre Loti, with illustrations by Luigi Rossi and Felician Myrbach. Paris: Calmann Levy, 1888. Figaro Edition. 330 pages. Hardcover, with half-bound blue leather, raised gilt decoration, and marbleized endpages. The diary of a naval officer temporarily married to a geisha while stationed in Nagasaki, Japan. André Messager's 1893 opera of the same name is based on the story, as are some aspects of Puccini's 1904 opera Madame Butterfly.
