Burgess was a conservationist, he loved the beauty of nature and its living creatures. He wrote about them for 50 years in books and in his newspaper column, "Bedtime Stories." When he died, the MA Audubon Society purchased his home, establishing the Laughing Brook Wildlife Sanctuary.
