Why We Love This

"Jason remembers the day that he first encountered faux bamboo. It was a stormy afternoon in Sarasota, Florida, and Granny Myrtle had taken Jason to an antiques shop where the parsimonious old broad was trying to unload some Danish modern furnishings so she could load up on ‘fine wines’--her words, not ours--for some Sweet Adelines shindig that she was planning to throw that would involve candles floating in her swimming pool and a mariachi band for ‘some goddamn reason’--her words, not ours. Well, we spotted a faux bamboo chair in the crepuscule light and have been smitten with faux bamboo ever since like this faux bamboo oval mirror.”

John Loecke and Jason Oliver Nixon are the dynamic duo behind Madcap Cottage, their Brooklyn-based interior design firm. Known for their whimsical use of color and pattern, the Madcap gents scour the world for eclectic finds that capture their unique and gimlet-eyed view of the world. Imagine a British country house that pairs Granny’s antiques and a spirited dash of chinoiserie chic with a side of Moroccan marvelous and Indian élan. "If you are looking for beige and boring,” says Jason, "go bark up someone else’s tree.”
