"The hats are made by only a handful of men on an isolated island off the coast Sumbawa Island in Indonesia. They are typically the eldest sons of families who have made this particular type of hat for generations and still use the traditional techniques taught by parents, grandparents and great grandparents. The hats are worn by the elders and musicians in important rituals and ceremonies. The hats are made of hand-plated and formed fine-gauge copper wire. They feature a bud or flower-like ornamentation atop a long stem on the crowns The brim gently curves upwards. The hats rest on custom steel stands painted black.

The name "The Mercantile" originates from the Chicago roots of owner Barbara Heath, and emanates a sense of elements both traditional and contemporary. The products within The Mercantile are inspired by clean and classic lines for a transitional home interior. The rich collection of home furnishings, art and accessories emphasize texture, pattern and design elements to embrace simplicity, sophistication and timelessness. Alongside custom furniture, case pieces, seating, tables, lighting, and beds, the company also offers original art, hand-painted wallpaper, and decorative accents.
