An original encaustic painting by Paula Blackwell. To achieve the beautifully aged appearance of this work, Blackwell applied several translucent layers of pigmented hot wax onto the wood panel base. There may be a slight texture on the painting’s surface due to the air bubbles, cracks, and other reactions that happen during the heating and fusing process. The wood frame is stained a rich black color.
A former muralist and painter for 20 years, Paula Blackwell discovered the luminous, layered creations she could make using encaustic paint in 2010. In this medium, her landscapes become vivid and mysterious at once; in her words, "Unlike in oil painting, my torch is my paintbrush." Blackwell lives in Portland, Oregon, and her work has been shown extensively in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
