Why We Love This

A handsome pair of vintage prints of the original engraving depicting Powis House and Mountague House, grand country houses of England. Born in London in 1525, John Stow is one of the best known Elizabethan antiquaries. He was a prosperous tailor until about 1566, after which he devoted his time to collecting rare books and manuscripts. He was a self-educated, passionate scholar and was employed by the Archbishop of Canterbury to edit medieval chronicles. His Survey, which took the form of a perambulation around London, contains fascinating details of the city's transition from medieval to modern, along with beautiful engravings of famous London squares. These are fine-art vintage prints of original antiques in the William Stafford Archive.
