Originally named "Bahía de los Pinos" by Spanish explorers after its windswept Monterey pines, Monterey Bay is located just south of San Francisco. Famed for its sublime beauty, the area of coastline from Monterey to Big Sur is home to many species of marine mammals, including sea otters, harbor seals, and bottlenose dolphins. This area is also on the migratory path of gray and humpback whales. This depiction of the region is hand-drawn and printed on an old-fashioned letterpress to look like an authentic artifact. It has been tinted with watercolor by the artist.
The artist Michelle Murdock founded Quail Lane Press to create her magical illustrations and works of art for a larger audience. While she’s always been an illustrator, Murdock earned a masters of science from Yale University before migrating to the West Coast. Quail Lane Press combines her love of art and science. The company operates in Tahoe City in northern California. All of the designs are made using environmentally-friendly techniques.
