An original lithograph printed in black ink on China paper. Signed on the stone with the artist’s monogram device lower right.
This is a fine impression of Wittrock’s only state from the edition of unknown size published in 1926. It was commissioned by A. Quinzard Cie, Paris, to illustrate the sheet music cover for the song “Au Jardin de mon Coeur.” This was one of the last songs illustrated by Lautrec. On the left of the suitor kneeling before the unfeeling beauty is Derby, Lautrec’s “faithful friend.” In Lautrec’s late works, he gives expression once again to his early interest in animals, particularly in dogs and horses as the embodiment of natural beauty, strength and speed. Here, we see the collie of Lautrec’s friend Robin Langlois.
