Edward Steichen came to prominence as photographer during the last decade of the 19th century. Steichen printed his negatives on platinum paper or by hand-coating paper with a mixture that produced a soft impressionistic focus. Together with Alfred Stieglitz, Steichen helped create the seminal Photo-Secession movement. In time, Steichen developed a completely new photographic style, mastering a technique that called for sharp focus and dramatic lighting. This collection of photogravures is remarkable for its interpretation of the dramatic images so characteristic of Steichen’s work. The prints can, as Stieglitz wrote in 1905, be considered original and that each is “printed in the spirit of the original picture.”
