Antique chair from the Hudson River Valley with rush seat, Spanish feet, and Queen Anne-style vase-shaped splat. American, 18th century.
Julia Winston Adams has been a curator, designer, collector, and teacher of the decorative arts for a half-century. She has curated three 19th-century houses, has taught 18th-century decorative arts at UCLA, and was an enthusiast of mid-20th-century design long before it became trendy to be one. As much a historian as a decorator, she has collected and researched old glass, silver, porcelain, iron, folk arts, textiles, and her great love, Oriental rugs. Her favorite type of project? “One with a tight budget,” she says. “It inspires creativity.”
