Why We Love This

The interior of Penn Station, New York, looking down on passengers gathered in the main hall. The station opened in 1910 for Long Island Rail Road trains to run via the new tunnel under the East River. This gesso and wood frame is hand-finished by craftsmen using traditional 17th century Florentine techniques. This frame is hand-painted in black.

When European designers need the perfect black-and-white photograph, they turn to the archives of the William Stafford Gallery. Based in London, the gallery sources evocative, memorable images from large and small collections across the globe. William Stafford is known for unearthing remarkable undiscovered works by the most important photographers. The combination of the finest paper and ink on each work guarantees perfect clarity for a minimum of 50 years.
