This work is a wonderful example of the artist’s bold, minimalist style. The emphasis on a single object -- a label-less ketchup bottle -- is reminiscent of Pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Alex Katz. The original was fashioned out of colored paper; this fine print is set in a handsome white wood frame and arrives ready to hang.
Rankin Willard creates his work with an innovative blend of digital technology. Early on, he takes an image, hunting through Tumblr and often creating his own collage of multiple ideas. He manipulates that image in Photoshop to exaggerate the contrasts, and then dives into a far more old-fashioned process of sketching and cutting up the thousands of paper shards by hand. The ultimate result is an almost shockingly immediate depiction of his subject. Willard attended High Point University and is a native of North Carolina.
