From the private collection of the author, Mr. Hilary Knight, author and illustrator celebrated for his illustrations of the Eloise series of children's books. First Edition. Oversized folio, unpaginated and profuse illustrations in black and white and color. Souvenir program features striking portraits of the Ballets Russes principals, including Danilova and Massine, by noted photographers including Mishkin, alongside candid photos onstage and off. Synopses of each ballet are provided, as are full color reproduction of sets and costume designs by luminaries including Gontcharova, Beaton, Bakst, Picasso, Berard, and Dufy. Contains several amusing Art Deco-inspired advertisements, including a Lyse Darcy illustrations for Guerlain perfumes. Includes the Arts section from the New York Times of April 26, 1936, noting the departure of Toscanini from the Met, laid in at title page.

Sometime in the early ’50s, Hilary Knight’s drawings of naughty little girls for Mademoiselle magazine led to a meeting with author Kay Thompson (then a top nightclub performer)--and, of course, to the perpetually adored Eloise, the precocious Plaza dweller who in many ways is Knight’s alter ego. “Eloise will be celebrating her 60th birthday in 2015--not bad for a six-year-old,” says Knight. We’re honored to offer these personal pieces from Knight, who remains as stylish, outspoken, and original as the legendary little girl he brought to life.
