As described by
The Notebooks of Henry James by F.O. Matthiessen and Kenneth B. Murdock. Oxford University Press, 1947. Hardcover with dj clear sleeve. 415 pages. The authors have spent years editing the handwritten manuscripts into which James confided his hopes, misgivings, and beliefs as a creative artist as well as the specific problems of his craft. They point out entries that eventually turned into finished works by James, then went beyond that to discuss and evaluate the works themselves.
