Why We Love This

This is an original lithograph printed in brown ink on Japan paper. It is a fine impression of the definitive state, from the deluxe edition of 50 (there were an additional 200 standard edition sets and 25 sets designated hors commerce, for an overall edition of 275). The images were drawn and proofed by Matisse in 1954 as illustrations to the text of the same title by the 17th century poet John-Antoine Nau. Published and printed by Fernand Mourlot, Paris, 1972. Catalogue raisonné reference: Fribourg 15; Claude Duthuit ouvrages illustres no. 37.

This work is part of a carefully curated selection by noted fine art expert Jennifer McCloskey, who was formerly affiliated with Doyle Gallery in New York and is now based in San Francisco.
