Why We Love This

The composition of figures illustrates the submission of man to fate. The sky in the background is illuminated by lightning. On a rocky promontory, two frightened children cling to a pregnant woman who stands among the bodies of other members of the tribe. Her attitude and actions suggest her total submission to a higher power. This illustration offers an interpretation of the verse that is much more dramatic than the decorative page or the page of text, through a strong personification of the deity, seen as a force against which the human being, dependent on his benevolence, is impotent. Fiat voluntas tua sicut in coelo et en terra (Your Will is on Earth as it is in Heaven, 1899) is a heliogravure (from the artist’s original composition in India ink over pencil, enhanced with gouache) printed in black ink on wove paper bearing the “Pater” watermark. This is a fine impression from the edition of 510, the fourth of seven allegorical compositions illustrating the artist’s book Le Pater. Published by Henri Piazza, Paris; printed by F. Champenois, Paris. This is in excellent condition, printed on a sheet with full margins.
