Betel nut container (circa 1900), of the Maranao people, from island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines. The box is made of heavily cast bronze with pure silver inlay in the traditional Muslim "okir" scroll pattern, a distinguishing motif often found on Maranao wood carvings.

After years of travel, stints in architectural design, and a decade of compulsive collecting, James Eddy founded Colonial Arts as a cyber enterprise in 1998. Housed today in a historic brick-and-timber building in the San Francisco Design Center, the gallery focuses on high-quality Spanish Colonial and folk art from Spain and the Americas, sensational Continental furniture, tribal art, period silver, textiles, jewelry, and an impressive assortment of reference materials.
