Small bell wheel-thrown in stoneware, trimmed with a fine bevel, hand-painted with iron stripes and high-fired to its vitrified state. The bell is assembled with a reclaimed walnut knocker and organically grown hemp rope with twine-bound ends.

Michele Quan's pieces are a canvas for her love of drawing, painting, text, and color. Many of the objects and images are rooted in the visual symbols of Eastern iconography--the meaning and beauty of which she is continuously in awe. Forms are built by hand, wheel-thrown, or slip cast in stoneware and porcelain. All original models for slip-cast work are hand-sculpted, with images painted or drawn by hand. She also works with brass, hand-dyed cotton, felted wool, organically grown hemp rope, and reclaimed wood. Incorporating these themes and components are garlands, skulls, bells, birdhouses, jewels, eyes, flowers, bowls, bones, tusks, needles, shells, and whale teeth. Bells ring in honor of the present through sound, while skulls are an ever-reminder that all is transient.
