French antique engraving of Sylvain Valée, a soldier during the French Revolution, a commander for Napoleon and later for the King. In 1838, in order to raise money for the restoration of Versailles, the king commissioned a series of high-quality engravings of famous French personalities that were sold by subscription to wealthy supporters.
