Julian Rapp creates textured, beautifully layered paintings, often drawing on materials like newspaper and spray paint to further enrich his canvases. Rapp grew up in the suburbs of Boston and worked in the music industry before turning to painting full-time in his Brooklyn studio. He counts some of the most envelope-pushing artists--like Basquiat and Picasso--among his influences, yet Rapp’s pieces look completely right for 2013.
