Born in 1983, Santiago Ascui is a native of Santiago, Chile. He is steeped in art, having studied fine arts at Finis Terrae University and grown up with a mother who paints and a grandfather who writes about art. Ascui counts Russian Constructivism and the Bauhaus movements among his influences, as well as the charged yet orderly work of Piet Mondrian. Beyond the artistic canon, Ascui looks to street life--from skateboarding to graffiti--for inspiration. This influences are distilled in his unique and irresistible style, and his way of using color to “create optical rhythms between figures.” Ascui paints in his Santiago studio, often spending weeks on a single painting.
