Capturing a perfectly still view of the horizon line, this Hiroshi Sugimoto photograph is reminiscent of Mark Rothko’s meditative horizontals. The work is from Sugimoto’s Time Exposed Portfolio of 1991. It is blindstamped on the recto with location, year, and image number.
Born in Tokyo in 1948, the artist Hiroshi Sugimoto moved to Los Angeles in 1970 to study photography at the Art Center College of Design. Best known for his highly stylized photographic series of seascapes, movie theaters, natural history dioramas, waxworks, and Buddhist sculptures, Sugimoto’s work provokes questions about the relationship of photography and time, and explores the mysterious nature of reality. Sugimoto now lives in New York and Tokyo.
