This framed lithograph is from the book edition and has a fold. It is from the art revue Verve. Founded in 1937 by Henri Matisse’s friend E. Teriade, Verve was a lavish publication on the arts. The magazine showcased original lithographs by the leading artists of the day.

Russian by birth, Marc Chagall was educated in St. Petersburg and Paris, eventually emigrating to France in 1923. His early influences were Russian expressionism and French cubism, but Chagall created a style that was unique to the 20th century. His mastery of color suffuses his paintings and prints as well as the stained glass work that he created for European cathedrals.
