Twin-sized hand-dyed and sun-bleached pieced quilt. Lighter portions were created by binding and leaving in the California sunshine to bleach for up to a month.
Maricolous (muh 'rick uh luss...inhabiting the sea) is a line of home effects and wearable textiles that explores the alchemy of dyeing and the poetry of the loom. Using only hand-dyed cotton, fiber-reactive dyes, vat dyes, and natural dyes from extracts and from botanicals foraged near home, Ashley Thayer practices various traditional resist techniques from Africa, India, and Japan, including various methods of folding, wrapping, stitching, and clamping. Using 100% cotton with cotton flannel as batting, she pieces and finishes the quilts on a big old industrial Brother sewing machine. Each quilt is conceived individually, with color and composition carefully considered.
