This beautiful work depicts a scene from Daphnis and Chloe, the ancient Greek love story. Written by the Greek novelist Longus and set on the pastoral island of Lesbos, Daphnis and Chloe is one of the most captivating romances -- in fact, it is said to have influenced every love story from Romeo and Juliet to The Princess Bride. Marc Chagall's intimate, dream-like illustrations of this tale are the most important graphic works he created. They show his wonderful style of storytelling and his spectacular sense of color. This lithograph comes from the book edition. It is set in a handsome wood frame and is ready to hang.

Russian by birth, Marc Chagall was educated in St. Petersburg and Paris, eventually emigrating to France in 1923. His early influences were Russian expressionism and French cubism, but Chagall created a style that was unique to the 20th century. His mastery of color suffuses his paintings and prints as well as the stained glass work that he created for European cathedrals.
