Wonderful decorative Ashanti fertility doll from Ghana. Hand-carved wooden figure is decorated with encrusted brass foil and red and white glass beads. Traditionally, these dolls are carried on the backs of women hoping to conceive a child, or to ensure the attractiveness of the child being carried. When not in active use, the akuaba would be ritually washed and cared for. Today, these have gained currency as a general symbol of good luck.
