As described by Christopher de Lotbinière's Rare Books

The Book of Lost Tales by J. R. R. Tolkien. London: Guild Publishing, 1987. Book Club printing. Begun when he was only 25, this constitutes the first major work by Tolkien, in which he begins to imagine the whole history of Middle Earth. His belief that a culture could only be defined by its language that could in turn come from a history, led him to create a whole mythic past, from which The Lord of the Rings later derives.
