Why We Love This

An offset lithograph poster printed in colors on wove paper. This work is a fine impression from the edition of 5,250. Transcribed from the artist’s June 19, 1972 watercolor Le peinte et son modèle by Henri Deschamps, published and printed by Atelier Fernand Mourlot, Paris, bearing their credit line at the lower right edge of the image. Also bearing the inscription in pencil at the lower right “For Graham Sutherland. My friend. That meeting with Pablo Picasso and the lithographer, for one and the other Master. Henri Deschamps, Paris 8 April 73.”
On Monday, June 19, 1972, Picasso did this drawing in pastels and ink, showing an elderly artist, with a beard and a long moustache, regarding rather voluptuously a nude model. The model is very close to the painter and, in view of the sexual aggression in his eyes, covers up her naked breasts. Masterfully, Picasso defines in a few simple ink lines the corporeal bulk of the male figure, as well as the main features of the face, particularly the expressiveness of the gaze and, in greater detail, the tones of the model’s face and body. The coloring of the blue background and the pink skin of the female body give this work a harmony which is well fitted to the theme.
