Why We Love This

Exquisite and vivid watercolor by Erle Loran (American, 1905-1999) titled Peaks Near Malakoff Diggins 1. Erle Loran was a modernist of urban and coastal views and geometric painting. Fascinated by Cézanne, he painted the countryside around Aix en Provence and wrote the book Cézanne's Composition in 1943. Loran's students at UC Berkeley included Richard Diebenkorn and Sam Francis. Signed "Loran '80" lower right, dated with label on verso. Metal frame. Image, 23"H x 31"L.
