Why We Love This

Original copperplate engraving on laid paper from P. S. Bartoli's Le Antiche Lucerne, (Rome, 1691). Plate no. 36 titled Saltator I. The engraving represents depictions by Bartoli of funerary lamps found in the ancient catacombs of Rome in the 17th century. Funerary lamps were placed in the tombs to light the way for the deceased in the afterlife. Displayed in an acid-free, standard-size mat. Image, 5"W x 6.5"H.
