Why We Love This

A fine-art reproduction of "Passage" (1962) by American artist Jasper Johns (b. 1930), set off in a custom-made frame.
A major figure in the second half of the 20th century, Johns investigated and uprooted the most basic premises of painting, taking culturally central forms -- a map, a target, the American flag -- and laying the work with encaustic paint and plastic relief to be literally thick with meaning. He pushed forward many stylistic movements, from pop to Minimalism to conceptual art, arriving at a position as a true master of American abstraction, both in paint and print.
