Why We Love This

London-born architect and designer Owen Jones was one of the most influential design theorists of his time. He traveled to Egypt to study the Islamic architecture in Cairo, and continued on to Constantinople before arriving in Granada in southern Spain in 1834. There, he carried out his visual record of the Alhambra palace and its extraordinary Islamic decoration. The standards of color printing at that time were not sophisticated enough to do justice to the intricate studies, so he printed the work himself in collaboration with the lithographers Day Haghe using the new process of chromolithography.
This is a fine art giclée reproduction of the original antique print. The gesso-and-wood frame is hand-finished by craftsmen using traditional 17th-century Florentine techniques and hand-painted in off-white.

About William Stafford

William Stafford Gallery has a sterling reputation for its reproduction prints. The London-based gallery is a treasure trove of fine-art prints, contemporary black-and-white photography, sepia photography, and works in color. By commissioning artists and photographers and then controlling all aspects of print production, the gallery ensures a consistently exceptional quality. Through collaborations with master framemakers, it offers new and refreshing presentation ideas in pace with today's design trends.
