Why We Love This

Bronze plaques with figures of musicians at the palace of the Oba the ruler of Benin, the capital city of the Edo people in Nigeria. Each figure plays a musical instrument ( Gong, horn, and drum). This plaque reflects the technique and high quality of brass casting known to the Benin from the 1500s, onward. Brass plaques were cast in high relief using the lost wax technique in combining copper with lead. The russet brown color of the surface comes from the rich red soil of the Benin region.

About Africa Direct

Africa Direct, Inc. is owned by Elizabeth Bennett and Sara Luther. African art, trade beads and ethnic jewelry are both business and passion for Sara and me. We started buying African art twenty years ago as gifts for our children, four of whom are adopted and are African-American. We had been active in anti-apartheid politics for some time.
