Why We Love This

This beadwork comes from the Xhosa speaking people of the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. The traditional function of the beads in this culture goes behind the simple fact that they embellish the objects. In early times, beads were used as currencies and as valuable items for exchange and compensation.

About Africa Direct

Africa Direct, Inc. is owned by Elizabeth Bennett and Sara Luther. African art, trade beads and ethnic jewelry are both business and passion for Sara and me. We started buying African art twenty years ago as gifts for our children, four of whom are adopted and are African-American. We had been active in anti-apartheid politics for some time.
