Why We Love This

Stephen Hero by James Joyce. London: Jonathan Cape, 1950. Fourth printing. This represents an earlier, unrevised draft of Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man from around 1904. When the original manuscript was rejected by publishers, Joyce attempted to burn it. This 400 page remnant, saved from the flames by his wife, is a tantalizing, alternative version of what is now a classic account of growing up. Jacket has general browning.
