A fine giclée reproduction of a hand-colored antique depiction of an artichoke by Basilius Besler. The Italian gesso-and-wood frame is hand-finished by craftsmen using traditional 17th-century Florentine techniques. It is distressed in gold.
Apothecary and botanist Basilius Besler (1561-1629) was responsible for the most celebrated collection of botanical illustrations ever published. The "Hortus Eystettensis" is the pictorial record of the gardens of the Prince-Bishop of Eichstatt, created in the early 1600s.
