Lord Berners painting a picture of Mrs. P. Betjeman and her Arab pony at his home in Berkshire, 1938. His Lordship was something of an eccentric who kept a menagerie of exotic animals under his roof. He died in 1950 at Faringdon House and the epitaph on his gravestone reads: "Here lies Lord Berners One of life's learners Thanks be to the Lord He never was bored". The gesso-and-wood frame is hand-finished by craftsmen using 17th-century Florentine techniques. It is hand-painted in black.
